What is finasteride tablets?

(DHT blocker, tablet form)

Finasteride tablets work identically to capsules: they block 5-alpha-reductase and stop DHT from shrinking hair follicles. The tablet form allows your physician to adjust dose easily, some people benefit from lower doses (0.5 mg instead of 1 mg), which your physician may trial. Tablets are a lower-cost option and are well studied.

Proven

over 20 years and millions of users worldwide

Finasteride tablets are the most-studied hair-loss medication. Cost is typically lower than capsules. Off-label for women, but effective.

How it works,
week by week.

  1. Day 1

Your physician reviews your hair-loss pattern, health history, medications, and sexuality. Discusses how DHT blockers work and the realistic timeline.

  2. Month 1-3

Start once daily. Many notice shedding may increase slightly at first (hair cycle shift), then stabilize. This is normal and temporary.

  3. Month 3-6

Hair loss slows or stops for most people. Regrowth takes longer. Keep a photo record to track subtle changes.

  4. Month 6-12+

New hair begins to show. Results peak around 12-24 months. Your physician checks in every 6 months; you can stop anytime.

What you may notice,
and when.

  • Patience required

results take 6-12 months; peak at 2 years

  • Stabilization first

hair loss stops before new growth appears

  • Sexual side effects rare

    1-3% experience them; usually reversible

  • Physician partnership

monitor prostate health; discuss any sexual concerns

Individual results vary. Benefits reflect what Zepym Health members commonly report to their physician at check-ins; they are not the results of a clinical trial.

Safety first:
what to know before you start.

Important safety information and common side effects

Finasteride and dutasteride block DHT, the hormone behind pattern hair loss. Sexual side effects (lower desire, erection difficulty) occur in 1-3% and usually reverse after stopping; your physician discusses this before prescribing. Mood changes are rare but possible. These medications are not prescribed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in people with a history of prostate cancer without careful evaluation. Monitor prostate health with your primary care physician; these drugs lower PSA levels, which can mask cancer screening. Tell your physician about all medications and any history of sexual dysfunction. Stop and seek care for severe mood changes, chest pain, or allergic reactions.

The research behind
finasteride.

Finasteride blocks the enzyme that turns testosterone into DHT. It has placebo-controlled trials in men with male pattern hair loss, mostly up to two years, plus open follow-up studies up to five years.

  • Five years93% less likely

Pooled from two Phase III trials of 1 mg a day in 1,553 men with androgenetic alopecia. Over five years, further visible hair loss was 93% less likely than with placebo (95% CI 89 to 97%).

Kaufman et al., Eur J Dermatol 2008;18(4):400-6
  • Japan, five years99.4% improved

Open series of 801 Japanese men on 1 mg a day, judged by photographs. 99.4% improved on the modified global photographic assessment. Starting at 40 or older and a more advanced Norwood stage predicted a weaker response. There was no placebo arm.

Yoshitake et al., J Dermatol 2015;42(7):735-8
  • Sexual effects71 men

A 2011 series of 71 men aged 21 to 46 who reported sexual side effects that lasted at least three months after stopping. Most reported low libido, erectile dysfunction and reduced arousal. The men were self-selected, so this shows the risk exists, not how common it is.

Irwig and Kolukula, J Sex Med 2011;8(6):1747-53

What the studies found

  • Makes further visible hair loss 93% less likely over five years than placebo in 1,553 men (Kaufman et al., Eur J Dermatol 2008).
  • Increased hair growth against placebo in all scalp regions at 24 months, in men aged 18 to 60 (Kaufman et al., J Am Acad Dermatol 2012).
  • Over five years in 801 Japanese men, 99.4% improved on photographic assessment, without a placebo arm (Yoshitake et al., J Dermatol 2015).
  • In the dose-ranging trials, 1 mg a day matched 5 mg and beat 0.2 mg and lower; 0.01 mg matched placebo (Roberts et al., J Am Acad Dermatol 1999).

Trial results are for finasteride 1 mg a day by mouth, and are averages across men, not predictions for one man. The catalog's 0.5 mg capsule and 1 mg tablet are the pharmacy's versions; the combined capsule with minoxidil has not been tested in these trials. Compounded versions were not studied.

What this does not say

  • Benefit in these trials is measured as less loss or more hair against placebo, and it reverses when treatment stops.
  • Sexual side effects are reported as a slightly higher rate than placebo in trials, but a small self-selected series describes effects that persisted after stopping; this should be discussed before starting.
  • We found no placebo-controlled finasteride trial longer than two years; the five-year and Japanese figures come from open or pooled follow-up.

The research
behind it.

Decades of data show finasteride tablets stop hair loss or regrow hair in 90% of men. Women with female-pattern hair loss also respond, though data come from smaller studies.

Sexual side effects (lower desire, erection difficulty) occur in 1-2% and often reverse after stopping. Your physician discusses this risk before you start.

Frequently asked questions

Contact support
How do I take Finasteride Tablets?

Taken by mouth, once a day. The starting prescription is 1 tablet (1 mg) each time. Your physician sets your own dose and it is printed on your label.

How much arrives in each shipment?

30 tablets at the starting strength, shipped to your door from a licensed US pharmacy.

Should I take a tablet or capsule?

Both work the same way. Tablets are cheaper and the dose can be split more easily if your physician wants to trial 0.5 mg. Capsules may taste less medicinal to some people. Your physician recommends based on cost and your preference.

Why do I shed more at first?

DHT-miniaturized follicles have shorter cycles. Blocking DHT triggers them to reset; this causes temporary shedding before new, fuller hair grows. It usually peaks at weeks 2-4 and is a sign the drug is working.

Can I combine finasteride and dutasteride?

No. They block overlapping pathways. Your physician chooses one based on your response. If one plateaus, you may switch to the other.

What if I stop taking it?

Hair loss usually resumes within 3-6 months, returning to your original pattern within 12 months. Any regrowth you had will be lost. Some people restart; others stop and accept their hair loss.

Can women use these?

Finasteride and dutasteride are off-label for women, but some respond well. They are not prescribed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Your physician carefully evaluates risk and benefit.
